STARCARES’ latest court redevelopment in Davao City will give students and residents a safer space to play, connect, and grow beyond the game.
In the Philippines, a basketball court is rarely just a place to play. It is where children run after confidence before they even know they are building it, where classmates become teammates, where neighbours become supporters, and where a simple weekend game can turn into a gathering for an entire barangay. In schools and communities, the court often becomes the heart of daily life, a place where young people learn teamwork, families come together, and everyone finds a shared space to grow, celebrate, and belong.
This is the spirit behind STARTRADER’s latest community project in the Philippines. Through STARCARES, its charitable arm, STARTRADER has officially launched the redevelopment of the basketball court at Communal Elementary School in Buhangin, Davao City, with a groundbreaking ceremony held on site.
Once completed, the upgraded court is expected to benefit around 20,000 people, including approximately 2,000 learners, 72 school staff, 1,600 parents, and nearly 16,000 residents of Barangay Communal.
A Space That Serves More Than One Purpose
For the students of Communal Elementary School, the court will become part of daily school life. It will support physical education classes, school assemblies, organised sports, and the simple joy of having a safer, more dependable place to move, play, and build confidence.
For the wider Barangay Communal community, it will become something equally important: a shared public space. A place for weekend activities, neighbourhood games, youth engagement, and community gatherings.
That is what makes this project meaningful. It does not serve only one group. It connects the school and the community around a space they can both use, protect, and be proud of.
How This Court Makes The Difference
A safe, well-maintained court can change the rhythm of a child’s day. It gives students room to move with confidence, teachers a better space for school activities, and parents reassurance that their children are growing in a safer environment. For the wider community, it becomes a shared place where people can gather with nothing more than a ball, a few friends, and the simple joy of being together.
In the Philippines, where basketball is part of everyday life, a court carries meaning beyond the game. It is where discipline is learned through practice, courage through competition, and resilience after every missed shot. It is also where friendships grow, confidence takes shape, and young people begin to feel they belong.
The redevelopment of the court at Communal Elementary School directly addresses this need, creating a safer, more functional, and more dependable space for learners and the wider Barangay Communal community for years to come.
Building on a Regional Commitment
The Davao City project is part of STARCARES’ growing global commitment to youth development through accessible sports infrastructure.
Following successful basketball court revitalisation projects in Vietnam and Thailand, the Philippines marks the next step in STARCARES’ mission to create safe, inclusive, and practical spaces where young people can learn, play, and grow together.
These projects are built around a simple idea: when communities have better spaces, young people have better chances. A court may look like a physical structure, but its impact reaches further. It supports health, confidence, social connection, discipline, and belonging.
“Breaking ground on this project is just the beginning. STARCARES exists to create lasting impact, and this court will provide thousands of students and residents in Buhangin with a safe, dependable place to learn, play, and come together for years to come,” said Peter Karsten, Chief Executive Officer of STARTRADER.
A Community Looking Forward
For Communal Elementary School, the project brings excitement and hope. The upgraded facility is expected to support not only school activities during the week, but also community use during weekends.
“We are excited to see this project take shape. It will give our learners a safe space to grow, be active, and build confidence while bringing our community together during weekends. We are deeply grateful to STARTRADER and STARCARES,” said Nelson Sepe Lubguban Jr., Principal of Communal Elementary School.
His words reflect the heart of the project. This is not only about improving a sports facility. It is about giving students a space that tells them they matter. It is about giving families a place they can share. It is about giving a community one more reason to come together.
More Courts, More Communities
Looking ahead, STARCARES will continue expanding its global basketball court initiative, with its next redevelopment project planned for Lagos, Nigeria.
For STARTRADER, these projects reflect a responsibility that extends beyond financial markets. Growth is not only measured through platforms, products, or business performance, but also through the value a company brings to the communities around it. Through STARCARES, that value is being translated into safe, inclusive, and accessible spaces where young people can play, connect, and grow with confidence.
Because lasting impact does not always begin with something complex. Sometimes, it begins with a safer court, a child brave enough to join the game, and a community that finally has a place to come together.
