Gift sets, household essentials and financial support for the 213 people at the village in Go Vap.

STARCARES spent the Mid-Autumn Festival at SOS Children’s Village Ho Chi Minh City in Go Vap, running a celebration for the 60 children living at the village with essential supplies and financial support reaching 213 people across the community, including children, house mothers and staff.
Every child got a gift set. A lantern, cookies, a water bottle, a milk pack and a colouring kit. Nothing complicated, just the sort of things a kid actually wants to open. Boxes of essentials went to the village houses as well, covering soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, sanitary pads, rice and cooking sauces.
Why this village
SOS Children’s Village Ho Chi Minh City cares for around 160 children who have lost parental care or are at risk of losing it. It is not a short stay. Children arrive as infants and many are still supported through college and university, raised in family houses by house mothers rather than in dormitories. That structure is the whole idea: siblings stay together, and a child grows up with one person who knows them.
It also costs money to keep running. International aid to the village has been cut back since 2023. So the funding is not really about the gifts. It goes into tuition, salaries for the people raising these children, and the buildings they live in.

Where this fits
SOS Children’s Village plans care in years, not one-off gestures. STARCARES works the same way, favouring recurring commitments over single donations under its Child Welfare and Community Aid pillar. Mid-Autumn is a much-loved children’s festival in Vietnam, which made a village raising 160 of them the obvious place to mark it.
“The village was already doing the hard part long before we arrived. Our job is to make the practical side steadier, so the people raising these children can plan instead of improvise.”
Peter Karsten, CEO, STARTRADER
“Support like this reaches our children in two ways. The essentials and funding ease real pressure on our households, and the celebration itself tells every child here that they are seen and thought of. That matters as much as anything we can put on a shelf.”
Mr. Hoang Long, Director, SOS Children’s Village Ho Chi Minh City
What comes next
STARCARES will build on the relationship established in Go Vap and extend the same work to other communities STARTRADER operates , alongside organisations already doing the hard part.
