In many rural communities, impact is not always measured by the size of a project. Sometimes, it is measured by whether children have a safe place to play, whether neighbours have somewhere to gather, and whether a school space can serve more people than it was first built for.
At Ban Nam Lat School in Sukhothai, Thailand, that impact is now visible every day.
Months after STARCARES renovated the school’s sports court, the space has become part of daily life for both students and nearby residents. During school days, it supports physical education and sports for 62 students. After school hours and on weekends, it opens to the surrounding community, extending its benefit to approximately 600 people across 180 households.
A Court Designed for More Than One Use
In rural areas with limited recreational infrastructure, schools often carry a role beyond education. They become familiar, accessible places where families gather, children meet, and communities stay connected.
That was the thinking behind the Ban Nam Lat School court renovation. STARCARES designed the project to serve students first while also supporting wider community use when classes end.
For students, the court provides a safer, more functional space for PE, sports, teamwork, and active learning. For residents, it offers a shared venue for play, recreation, and simple moments of connection close to home.
This dual purpose makes the project stronger. It allows one space to support school development during the week and community life during weekends, creating value for different generations without separating them.
A Small Moment With a Bigger Meaning
The social impact of the renovated court became especially clear when a child from the surrounding community joined Ban Nam Lat School students in a game.
It was a simple moment, but it showed exactly why shared spaces matter. The court not only gave children a place to play. It gave them a reason to meet, interact, and feel included.
For the child’s mother, the moment was deeply emotional.
“Seeing my son so happy brought tears to my eyes. He kept talking about the games, the other children, and how much he wanted to come back. As a mother, seeing him feel so included and joyful meant more than I can explain.”
Her words reveal the human value behind community infrastructure. A renovated court can improve movement, activity, and safety, but its deeper impact is often felt in belonging. When a child feels welcomed into a space, the benefit reaches far beyond the game.
Building Spaces That Continue to Serve
The Thailand court is part of STARCARES’ wider effort to create accessible sports spaces that support youth development and community connection. Similar projects in Vietnam, the Philippines, and Nigeria follow the same principle: infrastructure should be useful long after the opening ceremony ends.
To help protect that value, STARCARES now funds court maintenance every one to two years. This ensures the spaces remain safe, functional, and ready for continued use by the communities they serve.
The approach reflects a practical understanding of social impact. Building a court matters. Keeping it active matters even more.

At Ban Nam Lat School, that vision is already taking shape. The coussrt now supports education, recreation, and community life in one shared place. It gives students a better school environment, residents a reliable gathering space, and children from different parts of the community a place to belong.
For STARCARES, this is what lasting impact looks like: not only building a space, but seeing it used, shared, cared for, and woven into everyday life.
