For students preparing to become doctors, dentists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals, university life carries a special kind of pressure. There are long lectures, clinical training, exams, sleepless nights, and the responsibility of preparing for careers built around caring for others.
At the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, STARCARES, the community impact initiative of STARTRADER, has completed the redevelopment of the campus basketball court, providing approximately 2,000 future healthcare professionals a dedicated space for recreation, teamwork, and connection beyond their academic training.
Supporting Students Beyond the Classroom
Located in Idi-Araba, Surulere, the College of Medicine, University of Lagos is one of Nigeria’s key institutions for healthcare education. Since welcoming its first 28 medical students in 1962, it has grown into a highly competitive training ground for doctors, dentists, and allied health professionals, supported by 1,850 staff across 32 departments.
The court redevelopment responds to a simple but important need: students require spaces that support not only their academic progress, but also their wellbeing. The upgraded facility gives them a place to stay active after long study hours, participate in sports, connect with classmates, and return to their goals with renewed energy.
A Court With Everyday Impact
The redevelopment introduced a renewed playing surface, basketball infrastructure, benches, jerseys, and equipment for regular student use.
These upgrades transform an overlooked space into a practical part of campus life, supporting recreation, student activities, friendly competition, and moments of connection that help balance the demands of medical education.
Developed under the theme “Where Tomorrow STARs Begin,” the project reflects STARCARES’ focus on infrastructure designed for continued use beyond launch. A court may not be a classroom, but it can provide opportunities for teamwork, discipline, resilience, and confidence.

Built for Use, Built to Last
The transformation was marked by groundbreaking and turnover ceremonies, with students immediately stepping onto the completed court and putting it to use.
For STARCARES, the project reflects a broader commitment to youth development and community support through accessible sports infrastructure. By transforming underused spaces into places of participation and possibility, STARCARES invests in everyday experiences that support young people’s growth.
For students of the College of Medicine, the court is more than a place to play; it is a reminder that their wellbeing matters too.
Because supporting healthcare does not only begin in hospitals. It also begins on campus, with spaces that allow students to stay active, connect with others, and nurture their wellbeing before dedicating their lives to caring for others.
