U

Unit of account

A monetary unit used to measure the value of goods and services in an economy.

United Arab Emirates Dirham (AED)

The United Arab Emirates dirham is the UAE’s official currency. Its code is AED, and one dirham is divided into 100 fils. The Central Bank of the UAE manages the currency. AED is pegged to the US dollar at about 3.6725 dirhams for one dollar, which keeps USD/AED close to a fixed level. The dirham can still move against other currencies because their values change against the dollar. If the euro weakens against the dollar, it will generally weaken against the dirham too. Banks and exchange houses may add fees or use customer rates that differ slightly from the official reference.

United States Dollar (USD)

The United States dollar is the official currency of the United States and its territories. Its code is USD, its symbol is $, and one dollar is divided into 100 cents. It is also widely used in global trade, commodities, loans, contracts, and central-bank reserves. Currency pairs show its value differently depending on where USD appears. In EUR/USD, a fall means the dollar has strengthened against the euro. In USD/JPY, a rise means the dollar has strengthened against the yen. Reading the order of the two currencies is therefore important. The same dollar move can appear as a rise in one pair and a fall in another.

Universal currency

A theoretical single currency that could be used globally to facilitate international trade and finance.

University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment (MCSI)

MCSI is a short label often used on economic calendars for the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index. The survey asks US households about their finances, current economic conditions, and expectations for the future. Markets compare the latest result with the previous reading and with forecasts. A number above expectations may suggest that consumers feel more confident, while a weaker result can show growing concern. The survey also includes inflation expectations, which can receive as much attention as the headline index. MCSI is an index score. It is not a percentage change in spending, income, or economic growth.

University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index

The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index measures how US households feel about their finances and the wider economy. The monthly survey asks people about current conditions, future expectations, buying plans, and inflation. A higher reading means confidence has improved compared with earlier surveys. A lower one shows that consumers have become more concerned. People may feel negative because of rising living costs even when economic growth remains positive. A preliminary result is normally released first, followed by a final reading later in the month. Markets follow the index because confidence can influence spending and saving.
