U
U-shaped recovery
A sharp decline in the economy followed by a gradual, prolonged recovery.
U-Star
U-Star is an estimate of the unemployment rate that can exist when the economy is operating near its long-term potential and inflation is stable. It is also called the natural rate of unemployment. Some unemployment remains even in a healthy economy because people change jobs, enter the workforce, or search for positions that match their skills. If actual unemployment falls far below U-Star, employers may struggle to find workers and wage pressure may increase. The figure cannot be observed directly. Economists estimate it through models, so different methods can produce different results and the estimate may change over time.
U.S Prime Rate
The U.S. prime rate is a reference rate used by banks when pricing some loans, credit cards, and business borrowing. It is often described as the rate offered to customers with very strong credit. The Federal Reserve does not set it directly, but banks usually change their prime rates when the Federal Reserve adjusts short-term interest rates. A loan priced at “prime plus 2%” would charge the prime rate plus two percentage points. The final cost still depends on the borrower, the type of loan, and its terms. Prime is therefore a starting point for pricing, not a rate every customer receives.
U.S. Department of the Treasury
The U.S. Department of the Treasury manages many of the federal government’s financial activities. It collects revenue, makes government payments, manages public debt, supports the production of money, and carries out economic sanctions. When the government needs to borrow, the Treasury issues bills, notes, and bonds. Investors buying them are lending money to the government. The Treasury is separate from the Federal Reserve. Treasury handles government finance and borrowing, while the Federal Reserve is the central bank responsible for monetary policy. Their decisions may affect the same markets, but the two institutions have different roles.
Ugandan Shilling (UGX)
The Ugandan shilling is Uganda’s official currency and uses the code UGX. It is issued by the Bank of Uganda and appears in local prices, wages, bills, and daily payments. The current version of the shilling was introduced in 1987 after replacing an earlier currency. Because one shilling represents a small amount, ordinary prices may contain several thousand units. A price of UGX 50,000 simply means fifty thousand Ugandan shillings. Although the currency is officially divided into cents, these smaller units are rarely seen in normal transactions today. The code UGX helps identify it clearly in international payments and currency records.
Ugly
“Ugly” is informal trading language for a market that has become disorderly and difficult to handle. Prices may jump sharply in both directions, spreads may widen, and orders may be completed far from the price shown moments earlier. This often happens after unexpected news or when market liquidity suddenly disappears. An ugly market does not have to be falling. A fast rally can also become ugly if movement turns unstable and execution becomes difficult. The expression does not describe the long-term quality of the asset. It describes the poor and unpredictable trading conditions present at that moment.
