Businesses use xenocurrencies in international trade, investments, and cross-border payments. Because major currencies such as the US dollar, euro, British pound, and Japanese yen are widely accepted around the world, they often function as xenocurrencies outside their home markets.
Xenocurrencies matter because they help facilitate global commerce, but they also come with exchange-rate risk. Their value can rise or fall against a domestic currency, affecting costs, profits, and investment returns.

If a company in Brazil pays a supplier in US dollars instead of Brazilian reais, the US dollar acts as a xenocurrency in that transaction. If the dollar strengthens before payment is made, the Brazilian company may end up paying more in local currency terms.
