International Monetary Market (IMM) Date

IMM dates are standard quarterly dates used by many futures, currency, and interest-rate contracts. They are commonly linked to the third Wednesday of March, June, September, and December. Using shared dates makes contracts easier to compare, close, or move into a later period. The letters IMM come from the International Monetary Market, which helped develop major financial futures. The exact expiry, settlement, or final trading date may still vary by product, especially when holidays or special contract rules apply.

Intervention

Currency intervention occurs when a central bank or government buys or sells currencies to influence an exchange rate. A central bank may use its foreign reserves to buy its own currency when it believes it is falling too quickly. It may sell the local currency when a rapid rise is hurting exporters. Some actions are announced immediately, while others are confirmed later. Intervention can create a sharp market move, but its effect may fade if traders believe wider economic conditions point in the opposite direction. The operation may also change the amount of money in the banking system.

Intraday

Trading activities that occur within the same trading day.

Intraday Position

An intraday position is opened and closed within the same trading day. A trader might buy shares in the morning and sell them before the exchange closes, leaving no position overnight. The term can also refer to a trade that is currently open during the session, even if the final closing decision has not yet been made. Intraday trading avoids exposure to news released after the market closes. It still involves short-term price risk, spreads, fees, and the possibility that an order will not be completed at the expected price.

Introducing broker (IB)

A person or entity that refers clients to a brokerage firm and receives a commission for doing so.

Inverse correlation
