H
Haitian Gourdes (HTG)
Haiti’s official currency, which is made by the Banque de la République d’Haïti, and which is divided into 100 centimes (but with theoretical exchange rates, considering the inflation, the centimes don’t exist in reality). The notes circulate up to 1,000 gourdes.
Haiti has a managed float where the central bank regularly steps in to defend against the US dollar. Over long periods of time, the gourde has continued to slide and has been one of the most fragile and impoverished economies in the Western Hemisphere.
The USD is widely used in parallel with the gourde for the transaction of goods. Remittances from Haitians in the diaspora (mainly from the United States) are a big proportion of GDP and the main source of foreign currency inflows, which allows the dollar to hold near-parallel status in everyday transactions.
Example: A Haitian business owner who imports manufactured goods will pay local wages and suppliers in gourdes, but will enter into contracts in US dollars. The dollarisation strategy directly tackles gourde volatility. The use of dollars as the functional business currency protects the enterprise from the risk of depreciation on its key procurement transactions.
Halifax House Price Index
A monthly index of UK house prices released by Halifax, one of the UK’s biggest mortgage lenders and a part of Lloyds Banking Group. The index also reflects the prices based on Halifax’s own mortgage approval data and is one of the most up-to-date indexes of UK residential property conditions available along with the Nationwide House Price Index.
The monthly and annual change is presented seasonally adjusted. The three-month moving average is a more meaningful analysis, given the natural volatility in the data.
Alongside Nationwide’s counterpart, Halifax offers high-frequency housing data before the official ONS figures. Moves with a significant impact can affect the Bank of England’s thinking on consumer wealth effects and cause sterling to move as markets reprice rate expectations.
Example: The Halifax house price index has picked up significantly following several months of stagnation. Gilt markets respond as traders raise their expectations of the Bank of England’s rate path, with rising house prices fueling consumer wealth and confidence, making further interest rate cuts less pressing for the central bank. Sterling picks up a bit with a mere move in rate expectations caused by one lender’s mortgage approval data.
Halving
A scheduled event which automatically reduces the reward for miners by exactly half in Bitcoin’s protocol, happening every 210,000 blocks or about every four years. To ensure the cap on Bitcoin’s total supply of 21 million coins, the Halvings occur by gradually decreasing the rate of new coins created until the supply reaches zero.
During the initial launch, miners were rewarded 50 BTC for every block they mined. Every other halving that rewards down will be written. The mechanism is engineered to have programmatic scarcity: When the demand remains constant or increases while the supply goes down, basic economic rules, and so will the prices. Bitcoin has had historical price increases after the halving, but it is not certain that it is a causal connection due to the effect of overall market conditions.
Halvings also have an impact on miner economics they can lead to marginal operations not being profitable, and cause a brief network hash rate decline until the difficulty adjusts.
Example: A miner who was barely profitable prior to a halving reevaluates his business after the halving. If bitcoin’s price does not rise proportionally, miners shut down their rigs. Until difficulty levels are lowered, the remaining miners receive a more significant portion of the smaller reward pool, and the self-correcting mechanism of the network that restores miner profitability at the new lower reward level.
Hammer
A one candle reversal after a downtrend. The candle has a short body at the top end of the candle size range, and a long lower wick (at least twice the body’s length), with little or no upper wick. Visually: small head and long handle.
The rationale: Sellers pushed prices down very quickly during the session, but buyers were able to make up almost all those losses by session’s end, leaving a small body near the session high. During a downtrend, this recovery can indicate the end of selling pressure and the start of buying pressure at the lows.
The characteristics that make the signal more reliable are a long downward trend prior to the candle, a long lower wick at least twice the length of the body of the candle, and the subsequent candle closing above the body of the candle. If there is no confirmation, the hammer can just continue its price declines.
Example: A stock that has been in a downtrend for a number of weeks prints a hammer candle at a previous support level, where the wick extends deep below the candle body and the stock closes near the day’s high on increased volume. The next session starts and finishes above the body of the hammer, which is where technical traders look for confirmation and use it as a long entry, with the stop just below the body.
Hammer Candlestick
A bullish indicator that signals strong buying pressure, initially pushing the price down but closing near the high.
Handle
The whole-number part of a price quote is also called the big figure. If EUR/USD is quoted at 1.0847, the handle is 1.08. Professional dealing rooms typically don’t quote the handle as it will be apparent to both parties from the data on their screens. A dealer calling out “forty-seven, fifty” implies 1.0847/1.0850.
In equity markets, a stock at $152.75 has a handle of $152. The price of $150 is the “$150 handle” that traders are keeping an eye on.
Transitions have a psychological value larger than the nominal value of the price change. When the price moves from $199 to $200 or drops one of the numbers in a sell-off, the perception of the price range is anchored and orders tend to be grouped at those price points, because traders tend to mentally represent price ranges around the number they first read.
Example: An FX trader contacts her interbank counterpart requesting the price in cable, and receives the response “forty-two, forty-five. No handle is mentioned both traders have the same handle of 1.27 on their Reuters terminals, and the shorthand is understood. The professional convention removes all redundant digits and only leaves the digits which differentiate the bid from the offer at the given moment for the given quote.
