Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC)

IIROC was the organisation that regulated investment dealers and trading activity in Canadian debt and equity markets. It created rules, inspected firms, and carried out enforcement actions. The name is now historical. In 2023, IIROC and the Mutual Fund Dealers Association combined into a new organisation that later adopted the name Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization, or CIRO. Older agreements, reports, and disciplinary cases may still use IIROC. Current references to Canadian dealer regulation are more likely to appear under CIRO.

Investor Movement Index (IMX)

The Investor Movement Index was created by TD Ameritrade to measure how its clients were positioned in the US stock market. Instead of asking investors whether they felt positive or negative, it used actual account holdings and trading activity. A higher reading meant clients had greater stock-market exposure compared with the index’s own history. IMX was not a market index that could be purchased. After TD Ameritrade became part of Charles Schwab, the series was replaced by the Schwab Trading Activity Index, known as STAX.

INX

INX is a data symbol commonly used for the S&P 500 Index, especially in formats such as .INX. The index follows large US companies and is measured in points. INX is not the ticker of a company whose shares can be purchased. It is also not a universal code. Other platforms may show the same index as SPX, ^GSPC, US500, or another provider-specific symbol. A broker may also use a similar name for a CFD or futures-based product. The description shown beside the symbol identifies exactly what is being quoted.

IOTA

IOTA is a distributed-ledger network and the name of its native crypto token. The project is designed for digital assets, payments, identity tools, and records that can be checked without one central database. The token may be used for network activity, governance, and other functions set by the protocol. IOTA has changed its technical structure over time, so older explanations may no longer match the current system. The market price of the token depends on trading demand, while the network’s usefulness depends on security, applications, developers, and real-world adoption.

IOU

IOU is a written acknowledgement that one person or organisation owes something to another. The letters come from the phrase “I owe you.” A note saying “I owe Sam $500” records the debt but may not include a repayment date, interest rate, or legal terms. In finance and crypto, an IOU can also represent a claim on money or assets held elsewhere. Owning that claim is different from directly holding the asset. Its value depends on whether the issuer can and will honour the promise.

IPO

An initial public offering, or IPO, is the first sale of a private company’s shares to public investors. The company may issue new shares to raise money, while early owners may also sell part of their holdings. Before the offering, it publishes a prospectus covering its business, finances, plans, and major risks. Investment banks help set the offer price and find buyers. When exchange trading begins, supply and demand take control, so the market price may rise above or fall below the IPO price. Popular offerings may be difficult for ordinary investors to access because brokers receive limited allocations.
