Indirect Quote
An indirect quote shows how much foreign currency one unit of the domestic currency can buy. From a US viewpoint, saying that one dollar buys 150 yen is an indirect quote. If the figure rises to 155, the dollar can now buy more yen and has strengthened. The same exchange rate can be written in the opposite form by taking its reciprocal. Whether a rate is direct or indirect therefore depends on the reader’s home currency. A quote considered indirect in the United States may be viewed differently by someone in Japan.
Indonesian Rupiah (IDR)
Indonesia’s official currency is the rupiah, which uses the code IDR and the symbol Rp. Everyday prices often appear in thousands or millions because each rupiah has a small individual value. Local punctuation can also surprise visitors. Rp100.000 normally means one hundred thousand rupiah, since a full stop is often used to separate thousands. Bank Indonesia publishes JISDOR as a reference for the rupiah against the US dollar. The rate is based on transactions in the domestic interbank foreign-exchange market and is widely used in financial reporting.
Industrial production
Industrial production measures how much factories, mines, and utilities are producing. It focuses on physical output rather than the money value of the goods. A rise in product prices alone does not increase industrial production if the same quantity is being made. In the United States, the Federal Reserve publishes the figure each month. The report also includes capacity utilisation, which estimates how much of the available industrial equipment and facilities are being used. Manufacturing receives most of the attention, but mining, electricity, and gas production are also included in the wider measure.
Inflation
The increasing percentage of prices for goods and services over time, reducing the purchasing power of currency.
Initial Jobless Claims
Initial Jobless Claims count new applications for unemployment insurance in the United States. The figure is released every week, making it one of the fastest labour-market reports. A sustained rise may suggest that layoffs are increasing. A low number usually points to fewer people newly losing work. One unusual week can be affected by holidays, storms, strikes, or delays in processing applications, so the four-week average is often more useful. Continuing claims are reported separately and cover people who remain on benefits after their first application.
