Trading Glossary
Glossary trade refers to a type of trading strategy where traders use a predefined set of terms, definitions, or concepts to make informed decisions. It often involves industry-specific jargon, financial metrics, and analytical tools to navigate markets effectively.
U
Underlying
An underlying is the asset, rate, index, or commodity used to calculate the value of a derivative. Apple shares are the underlying for an option linked to Apple. Crude oil can be the underlying for an oil futures contract, while the S&P 500 may support the value of an index option. The derivative is a separate financial product. Buying the contract does not always mean owning the underlying asset. Its price may react to movements in the underlying, but other factors can matter too. Options, for example, are also affected by time remaining and expected market volatility.
Underlying asset
The product that a derivative contract is based on; as the underlying asset moves, the derivative contract mirrors its price.
Underlying Market
The underlying market is the market or contract used as the price source for another financial product. A gold CFD may follow the spot gold market, while another product may use a gold futures contract. That choice can affect trading hours, expiry rules, overnight pricing, and the way price gaps appear. Two brokers can therefore offer products with similar names that behave differently. The focus here is not only the asset itself. It is the specific market used to price the derivative. Checking the underlying market can explain details that may not be clear from the product name alone.
Unemployment rate
The percentage of the labour force that is currently unemployed, which speaks partly to the country’s economic health.
Unilateral contract
A type of financial contract in which one party is obligated to fulfill the terms of the contract, while the other party has the option to do so.
Uniswap (UNI)
Uniswap is a decentralised crypto protocol that allows users to exchange tokens through smart contracts instead of a traditional exchange company. Trades take place through liquidity pools containing pairs of tokens supplied by other users. Someone may connect a crypto wallet and swap ETH for USDC through a pool holding both assets. UNI is the protocol’s governance token and can be used in decisions about parts of the system. Owning UNI is not required for every trade. Users may still face network fees, price slippage, smart-contract problems, and possible losses when supplying tokens to a liquidity pool.
