UK average earnings including bonus/excluding bonus

UK average earnings show how employee pay is changing in Great Britain. The data are published in two forms. Total pay includes bonuses, while regular pay excludes them and focuses on normal wages and salaries. The difference becomes important during periods when companies pay large bonuses. Total pay may rise quickly even when basic wages change very little. Markets follow both figures because stronger earnings can support household spending and may also add to inflation. The results are usually shown as the percentage change compared with the same period one year earlier.

UK claimant count rate

The UK claimant count rate measures people receiving unemployment-related benefits as a percentage of the population used in the calculation. It is based on benefit records, which means it can give a quick view of labour-market conditions. It should not be confused with the official unemployment rate. Some unemployed people do not claim benefits, while some people included in the Claimant Count may not meet the official definition of unemployment. The rate can also be affected by changes in benefit rules. For this reason, it is best read alongside employment, vacancies, wages, and unemployment data.

UK Halifax house price index

Halifax uses its mortgage data to estimate how residential property prices are changing across the UK. The figures are adjusted so that different types of homes can be compared more fairly. Monthly results show how prices changed from the previous month, while annual results compare them with the same month one year earlier. The index offers an early view of the housing market, but it does not include every property sale. Cash purchases and mortgages arranged through other lenders are outside the data. This explains why the Halifax index may give a different result from other UK house price measures.

UK jobless claims change

UK jobless claims change shows how much the Claimant Count increased or decreased during the month. A reading of plus 20,000 means that 20,000 more people were included than in the previous month. A negative number means the count fell. The figure is watched because benefit records are available quickly and may show changes in the labour market before some other reports. However, it is not a direct count of jobs created or lost. People may enter or leave the system because of eligibility rules, personal circumstances, or changes to the benefits process.

UK manual unit wage loss

The wording of this indicator is confusing. UK manual unit wage loss is an older market-calendar term linked to the labour cost of producing one unit of output. A clearer name would be manual unit wage cost or unit labour cost. The figure compares wage changes with productivity. If factory wages rise by 5% while output per worker rises by only 2%, labour has become more expensive for each item produced. If productivity grows faster than wages, the cost per unit may fall. The word “loss” does not mean that a company has reported an actual financial loss.

UK oil

UK Oil is the name many trading platforms use for a product linked to Brent crude. Brent is one of the world’s main oil benchmarks and is quoted in US dollars per barrel. Its price can react to changes in global supply, demand, production, inventories, and political events affecting oil routes. Trading UK Oil normally means using a derivative that follows Brent prices. It does not usually involve buying or receiving physical barrels. The broker may base the product on futures or a cash price, so expiry dates, trading hours, and rollover rules can differ between providers.
