On November 26, STARTRADER participated in a tree-planting activity with sustainability advocates and community members at the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture in Dubai’s Academic City to further support the UAE’s environmental objectives.
The event fell just days before UAE National Day, aligning with ongoing national initiatives related to sustainability and environmental awareness.
Why the Ghaf Tree?
The national tree of the UAE is the Ghaf tree, declared in 2008. It provides an important ecological resource in the desert ecosystem. Native to this region, it grows in arid conditions with very low water requirements and provides shade during extremely hot temperatures and contributing to ecosystems in harsh desert environments.
The tree’s resilience and its ability to support life in arduous conditions are often associated with the UAE’s own values: perseverance, forward-looking, and long-term stewardship. Planting Ghaf trees during the National Day period reflects an intention to highlight the link between environmental sustainability and national identity.
Event Highlights
The morning program commenced with presentations from sustainability experts on the UAE’s green initiatives, highlighting the ecological importance of the Ghaf tree in desert environments.
STARTRADER representatives and participants then made a tour to the Emirates Soil Museum, which is an educational facility displaying different soil compositions of the region and their contribution to local ecosystems.
