Hot Storage
A method of storing cryptocurrency assets or private keys on a system connected to the internet, which allows immediate access for transactions but is also vulnerable to online security. Unlike cold storage, which is entirely offline storage of keys.
Hot storage is used by exchanges, custodians and active traders, because cryptocurrency transactions require accessible keys. You can’t send money as quickly from an offline device. Sophisticated operators keep the bulk of their assets in cold storage, and only the portion needed for operational liquidity in hot storage.
Hot storage is disproportionately targeted by online hacks, malware, phishing and exchange collapses. The history of failed cryptocurrency exchanges often reads as a story of exploited hot wallet vulnerabilities, sometimes with catastrophic consequences.
Example: A cryptocurrency exchange keeps 95% of customer assets in cold storage, and 5% in hot wallets for daily withdrawals. In the case of a security breach, the attacker only has access to the hot wallet, 5% of assets rather than 100%. The calculated cold-to-hot ratio is a risk management decision that determines what is at stake in the event the online infrastructure is compromised at any point.
Hot Wallet
A cryptocurrency wallet that stores private keys on an internet connected device, such as a smartphone, desktop app, browser extension or exchange account. Hot wallets allow instant transactions without the need for a physical hardware device, and are the main interface for active trading, DeFi participation and daily crypto use.
The security tradeoff is high. Because the private key is stored on a device that is connected to the internet, it is susceptible to being accessed by remote attackers, malware, phishing, and clipboard hijacking. Cryptocurrency transactions cannot be reversed. If a private key is compromised, the loss is permanent and cannot be reversed.
The best practice is to only keep what you need for near-term activity in a hot wallet and keep long-term holdings in cold storage, similar to keeping a small amount of cash in a wallet while keeping your savings elsewhere.
Example: A DeFi trader everyday uses hot wallet in form of browser extension for approving swaps, providing liquidity, and claiming rewards. Convenience is critical and active protocol participation. Most holdings remain in a hardware wallet, funds are moved to the hot wallet only for active use and returned to cold storage after each session, minimizing the attack window to the active trading period only.
Housing starts
A monthly report that measures the number of new residential construction projects started during a specific period.
Housing Starts
A monthly U.S. economic indicator from the U.S. Census Bureau and Department of Housing and Urban Development that measures the number of new residential building projects started in the period. Divided into single-family and multi-family. The most economically important are single-family starts.
Housing starts are a piece of the Conference Board’s Leading Economic Index, which tracks the economy’s direction. The thinking is that a start today means construction jobs tomorrow and, eventually, demand for materials, appliances and furniture economic multiplier effects that extend well beyond the building sector.
The series is volatile from month to month, especially due to weather impacts. Analysts use three-month rolling averages and building permits, which lead starts by one to two months, for cleaner signals.
Example: Housing starts fall for the third month in a row after a big jump in mortgage rates. Homebuilder stocks fall on the release. The Federal Reserve views the drop as evidence that monetary tightening is cooling the housing sector, usually one of the first sectors of the economy to respond visibly to changes in borrowing costs, and confirming that policy transmission is working as intended.
Hungarian Forint (HUF)
The official currency of Hungary. Issued by the Hungarian National Bank (MNB). It is divided into 100 fillér, but fillér is not used in practice anymore. Hungary has stuck to its national currency as a policy preference, and is one of the EU member states that have not adopted the euro.
The forint is freely floating against other currencies. The MNB has a history of large rate moves in line with inflation cycles and has used FX swap tools and direct intervention to curb excessive forint volatility.
The HUF is most liquid in EUR/HUF and hence sensitive to both eurozone economic releases and domestic fiscal/political developments. Hungary’s economy is closely tied to the eurozone through trade and foreign direct investment (FDI), especially through German automotive supply chains.
Example: Hungary’s central bank is sharply raising interest rates in response to rapidly rising inflation and a weakening forint. Aggressive tightening attracts carry-trade inflows, investors borrow in low-yielding currencies to buy high-yielding HUF assets which temporarily strengthens the forint. The question is whether the rate hikes are taking hold against inflation, or whether they are just attracting speculative capital that will reverse at the first sign of policy weakness.
Hurdle rate
The minimum rate of return that a hedge fund or other investments must achieve to justify the fees charged to clients.
