Kyrgyzstan Som (KGS)
The som is the national currency of the Kyrgyz Republic, carrying the ISO code KGS. It was introduced in May 1993, when Kyrgyzstan became one of the first former Soviet republics to leave the rouble zone and launch its own money, and it is issued by the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic. It is a small, thinly traded frontier currency, and its value is shaped heavily by remittances from Kyrgyz citizens working abroad, particularly in Russia, along with gold exports and the general health of the regional economy. That tight link to Russia means the som can move in sympathy with the rouble; when the rouble comes under strain, the som can also come under pressure. You will not find it on mainstream retail platforms, and any exposure tends to come through specialist channels with potentially wider spreads. Example: After a sharp drop in the Russian rouble, an analyst tracking Central Asia notes the Kyrgyz som weakening in step, with weaker remittance flows from migrant workers sending money home from Russia cited as one potential factor.
