University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment (MCSI)
MCSI is a short label often used on economic calendars for the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index. The survey asks US households about their finances, current economic conditions, and expectations for the future. Markets compare the latest result with the previous reading and with forecasts. A number above expectations may suggest that consumers feel more confident, while a weaker result can show growing concern. The survey also includes inflation expectations, which can receive as much attention as the headline index. MCSI is an index score. It is not a percentage change in spending, income, or economic growth.
University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment index
The University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index measures how US households feel about their finances and the wider economy. The monthly survey asks people about current conditions, future expectations, buying plans, and inflation. A higher reading means confidence has improved compared with earlier surveys. A lower one shows that consumers have become more concerned. People may feel negative because of rising living costs even when economic growth remains positive. A preliminary result is normally released first, followed by a final reading later in the month. Markets follow the index because confidence can influence spending and saving.
Unrealised gain/loss
An open position can show a profit or loss before it is closed. This changing amount is called an unrealised gain or loss. A share bought for $50 and currently trading at $58 has an unrealised gain of $8 per share. If the price later falls to $47, the same position shows an unrealised loss of $3. The amount becomes realised only when the position is sold or closed. Until then, it can keep changing with the market. Fees, taxes, financing charges, and the final execution price may also affect the result that the trader actually receives.
Unregulated market
A financial market that is not subject to government regulation or oversight.
Unsterilized Foreign Exchange Intervention
A central bank may buy or sell currencies to influence its exchange rate. Imagine that it buys US dollars and pays with newly created local currency. More local money then enters the banking system. If the central bank leaves that extra money in place, the action is called unsterilized foreign exchange intervention. The operation may affect both the exchange rate and domestic interest rates. A sterilized intervention works differently. The central bank carries out another transaction, such as selling domestic bonds, to remove the added money. “Unsterilized” therefore means that the effect on the domestic money supply is not cancelled.
Unwinding
The process of closing out a position in a product.
