Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose more than 2%, supported by Friday’s gains on Wall Street and comments from Bank of Japan Deputy Governor Shinichi Uchida, who described AI as a major positive demand shock that could boost economic activity and prices.
In Asian markets also, the Hang Seng edged 0.1% lower, while Australia’s ASX 200 was flat.
In the US, stock futures were mostly unchanged in early trading today, with Dow futures down 0.1%, S&P 500 futures flat and Nasdaq-100 futures up 0.2%. US stocks ended last week strongly, with the Dow rising 0.5%, the S&P 500 gaining 0.7% and the Nasdaq climbing 1.2% to a record high. Nvidia also reached a new all-time high, highlighting continued strength in technology stocks.
However, elevated Treasury yields remain a key concern for investors. The 10-year yield has climbed to its highest level in more than two decades, raising concerns that higher borrowing costs could weigh on stocks even if the Federal Reserve keeps interest rates unchanged in the near term.
A surprisingly weak jobs report helped ease expectations of another Fed rate hike this month, providing some relief to markets.
Attention now turns to the Federal Reserve’s September meeting minutes, due Wednesday, which could provide clues about the central bank’s next move.
In the currency market, EURUSD fell 0.6%, reaching its lowest level since May 2025. The Euro remains under pressure from rising eurozone inflation, higher interest rates, weak economic growth and growing fragmentation in European bond markets.
Gold prices rose toward $4,160, supported by a weaker than expected US jobs report that pressured the dollar and reduced expectations for further Fed rate hikes. US NFP increased by just 29,000 in September, well below the 90,000 forecast, while the probability of a rate hike this month fell to around 24% from 70% earlier in the week.
