Among institutional currency traders, “a buck” often means one million US dollars. “Twenty bucks” can mean twenty bucks at the deli or twenty million dollars on a swap line, and context is everything. The shift is unwritten but consistent across major dealing rooms.
The word also generates a few related coinages: “the greenback” for the dollar more broadly, “buckaroo” as an old-fashioned variant, and the somewhat cynical “almighty dollar” for the currency’s reserve status.
Example: A retail customer at a New York coffee shop hands over four bucks for a latte. Across town, an FX trader at a bank tells his counterpart “show me on fifty bucks of cable”; meaning he wants a quote on a fifty-million-dollar sterling-dollar transaction. Same word, six orders of magnitude apart.
