Time-Weighted Average Price (TWAP)

A TWAP algorithm spreads an order across a chosen period instead of sending the full amount at once. The schedule gives each time section similar importance. An order for 60,000 shares over six hours might aim to trade about 10,000 shares per hour. This can reduce the immediate market impact of a large transaction. TWAP differs from VWAP because it follows time, while VWAP aims to follow where market volume occurs. The method is easier to predict than a volume-based schedule, which can also make it easier for other traders to notice. Actual execution can still differ from the calculated average when prices move during the order.
