Time to maturity

Time to maturity is the period remaining before a financial contract reaches its final date. For a bond, that is when the issuer must repay the face value. For an option, it is the time left before the option expires. A bond issued for ten years will have only three years to maturity after seven years have passed. The remaining time can affect price and risk. A long-dated bond usually reacts more strongly to interest-rate changes than a similar short-dated bond. For options, less time means less opportunity for the underlying market to make a favourable move before expiry.
