Tariff

A tariff is a tax charged on goods entering a country. It may be set as a percentage of the product’s value or as a fixed amount per unit. A 10% tariff on an imported item worth $1,000 adds a $100 customs charge before other costs. Governments may use tariffs to raise revenue, protect local producers, or respond to another country’s policies. The importer normally pays the charge at the border, but the economic cost can be shared through higher customer prices, lower supplier prices, or smaller company margins. Tariffs apply to trade in goods and are different from normal sales taxes charged on domestic purchases.
