The Rise Of STARTRADER

One Of The
World’s Fastest Growing Brokerage

European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA)

The EU’s financial markets regulator and supervisory authority, established to enhance investor protection and promote stable, orderly markets across the bloc. ESMA directly supervises certain entities credit rating agencies, trade repositories, and specific third-country CCPs and produces binding technical standards implementing EU financial legislation.

ESMA’s supervisory convergence work closes the gaps that arise when 27 national regulators interpret the same EU rules differently. Guidelines, opinions, and peer reviews enforce consistent application across member states.

ESMA’s product intervention powers allow it to restrict or prohibit financial instruments deemed harmful to retail investors across the entire EU. Its leverage restrictions on retail CFDs and ban on binary options are the most visible exercises of this pan-EU authority, overriding any variation that had previously existed between national regulatory approaches.

Example: ESMA caps leverage on retail CFD accounts across the EU, limiting equity CFDs to 5:1 and major FX pairs to 30:1. A retail broker operating across multiple EU jurisdictions must implement identical limits regardless of which national regulator supervises its local entity the pan-EU rule overriding previous variation between member states and creating a consistent level playing field for retail investor protection.
