EIA Crude Oil Inventories

A weekly report from the US Energy Information Administration showing the change in crude stockpiles at commercial firms. Released every Wednesday at 10:30am Eastern, and one of the most market-moving recurring events for energy traders. The number comes as a change versus the prior week. Consensus expectations are published in advance. Bigger-than-expected build (more oil sitting in storage)? Crude prices fall. Bigger-than-expected draw? Crude rises. The reaction is often violent and immediate. The release also includes data on gasoline, distillate, and Cushing-specific inventories, Cushing being the Oklahoma hub where WTI physically settles. Traders parse all of it. Example: Consensus calls for a 2-million-barrel build. The actual print shows a 5-million-barrel draw. WTI moves $2-3 per barrel within minutes as positioning adjusts. By the close, traders have absorbed the broader picture and the move usually settles into something more measured. The first reaction is the noisy one.
