The Federal Reserve’s anecdotal economic report, released eight times a year roughly two weeks before each FOMC meeting. Each of the twelve regional Fed banks contributes a narrative summary of conditions in its district; what businesses are saying about hiring, prices, inventories, demand.
The report doesn’t produce numbers in the way a CPI or payrolls release does. It’s qualitative, written in plain English, and surprisingly readable. Markets pay close attention because the Beige Book often catches turning points before the data does. If a dozen Dallas business owners are suddenly worried about loan availability, that signal can show up in the Beige Book before it shows up in any official statistic.
Example: The Beige Book published in late 2007 was full of references to tightening credit conditions and faltering housing markets. Read in retrospect, it was screaming about the recession that wouldn’t be officially recognised for another year.
