Broker-dealer
An individual that acts as both a broker agent and principal trader, placing trades on behalf of their clients while simultaneously trading on their own account.
Buck
Slang for the US dollar. The etymology traces to colonial-era America, where deerskins (“bucks”) served as a unit of trade. By the mid-1800s the term was in casual use for paper dollars, and it never went away.
But “buck” doesn’t always mean one dollar. Among institutional currency traders, “a buck” often means one million US dollars. “Twenty bucks” can mean twenty bucks at the deli or twenty million dollars on a swap line, and context is everything. The shift is unwritten but consistent across major dealing rooms.
The word also generates a few related coinages: “the greenback” for the dollar more broadly, “buckaroo” as an old-fashioned variant, and the somewhat cynical “almighty dollar” for the currency’s reserve status.
Example: A retail customer at a New York coffee shop hands over four bucks for a latte. Across town, an FX trader at a bank tells his counterpart “show me on fifty bucks of cable”; meaning he wants a quote on a fifty-million-dollar sterling-dollar transaction. Same word, six orders of magnitude apart.
Bull market
An extended upward trend, marked by a 20% or more price increase from recent lows.
Business cycle
A natural economic fluctuation typically lasting around 5 years per cycle.
Buy and sell
The two primary drivers of trading. Timing these actions determines whether an investor makes a profit or loss.
Buy dips
A strategy, more often a tendency: when an asset you like falls in price, you buy more rather than less. The premise is that the long-term trend is up, the recent fall is noise, and the lower price is an opportunity.
Buy-the-dip works beautifully in a sustained bull market. It produced excellent results for US equity investors from 2009 through 2021, for crypto holders during multiple cycles, for tech-stock holders in the late 1990s; until it didn’t. The problem with the strategy is that it has no built-in stop. Every dip looks the same on the way down. Distinguishing a 10% pullback in an uptrend from the early innings of a 50% drawdown is the entire game, and most retail buyers are bad at it.
The professional version of buy-the-dip uses some combination of trend filters, technical levels, position-sizing rules, and explicit stops. The retail version often doesn’t, which is how dip-buyers turn into bag holders.
Example: S&P 500 dip-buyers had a phenomenal 2020. The COVID crash bottomed in March and the index made new highs by August. The same instinct applied during 2008 produced large drawdowns through November before the eventual March 2009 low. Same strategy. Different regime.
